    Many years ago, members of Muzsikás, a traditional folk band from Hungary, went in search of lost Jewish music. They found two surviving Roma who had played with Jewish musicians before the Shoah. Together they made a gorgeous album, Máramaros: The Lost Jewish Music of Transylvania. Hungarian singer Sebestyén Márta also collaborates.

    Maramureș is the Romanian name for the region. I used to understand some of its complicated history involving Hungary and Romania but it’s been too long. If you want to know, look it up 🙂
